National Institute for Civil Discourse Board calls on Congress to embrace civility pledge
Esteemed board that includes former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords urges Congress to commit to civility

June 23, 2017 – In the aftermath of last week’s tragic shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, the National Advisory Board of the National Institute for Civil Discourse is calling on members of Congress to commit to the same civility pledge adopted by freshman members of the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year.

Headquartered at the University of Arizona, the nonpartisan National Institute for Civil Discourse was established in the wake of the 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’s “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson. The organization, led by Executive Director Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, works to build civility among federal, state and local leaders nationwide.

The esteemed board, which includes former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, and former U.S. Senators Tom Daschle, Richard Lugar, Alan Simpson, and Olympia Snowe and several former members of Congress, urged all members of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate to sign on to the pledge to “help restore the civility and respect that are part of the foundation of our democracy.”
