Two days after the shocking events at the Capitol, NICD solemnly remembers another horrifying event that happened 10 years ago today. Six were killed and another 13 injured, including Representative Gabby Giffords, in the Tucson shooting.
Just weeks before, Gabby had been encouraging the University of Arizona to establish a center that would address the declining civility and bipartisanship in the nation. The University was committed that this event not be the last chapter in the story and created the National Institute for Civil Discourse in the weeks that followed.
All of us at NICD are proud to work on the mission encouraged by Gabby, that we build our ability to engage the nation’s differences constructively. May the tragic events of January 6, 2021 at the Capitol, like the events in Tucson on January 8, 2011, inspire all of us to step up to do our part to reach the full promise of American self-government.
